New nations face political, social and economic challeges to survive and progress in the international community. They need to stay alert and nimble in responding to these challenges. Singapore tries to overcome through the leadership and common will of its people and by working with other nations.

How do nations come into being and what challenges do they face? What is a nation? What kind of challeges do new nations such Singapore face? In studying this as part of this chapter, you will get to know more about national identity, importance of stable government, need for social cohesion, emphasis on economics development, as well as efforts at defence and seurity, and importance of diplomacy.

We will also be looking at the case study of Singapore's population policies to examine policy changes over time. While reviewing the population policies from 1970s to the 21st century, we will also look at the challenges of and responses to ageing population and declining birth rate.

Some challenges facing Singapore which we discuss addressing the needs of the different ethnic groups e.g. policy of minority representation, and integrating the ethnic groups in society e.g. forging natioanl identity, developing common space. Finally, we also study the benefits of a harmonious multi-ethnic society.

World security is further complicated by new threats such as transitional terrorism which is a challenge to all nation in achieving peace and prosperity

Managing Peace And Security: Deterrence And Diplomacy

How important is deterrence and diplomacy in maintaining international relation among nations? Why do conflicts exist among nations? What are some of the causes for international conflicts? This chapter starts with discussion of these questions before looking at how Singapore ensures its national security through its two-pronged approach of deterrence and diplomacy. THe study of deterrence discusses Total Defense strategy, professional nad citizens armed forces, defense industries, joint military exercise with other nations and multi-agency coordination on security. THe study of diplomacy discusses bilateral and nulti-lateral relations as well as membership in regional and international organizations such as ASEAN and the UN.
